Did You Know?

The Bureau has a sister company, Art Instruction Schools which has been training artists since 1914.

The Bureau History

The year was 1898. William McKinley was president. A young artist named Edwin F. Bauer, crossing the country by train, decided to stop over in Minneapolis to check it out. The city was bustling, busy feeding grain to a growing nation. He liked the city and the people so much that he decided to stay and start a commercial art company - the Bureau of Design.

The Bureau of Engraving, Inc. which it was renamed later, has continued to expand its services and in 1914, they started the Art Instruction Schools to help with the lack of trained illustrators for a growing printing and advertising market.

In 1954, the Bureau of Engraving, Inc opened the doors to a circuit board manufacturing facility which remained in business until 2003.

In 2004, The Bureau added a digital print division featuring a Xerox iGen3.

In 2006, The Bureau completed a major technology overhaul, upgrading every piece of technology within its walls.

In 2007, The Bureau launched The Bureau Online which is our Online Storefront, Prepress Portal and Creative Workflow Solution.

We at The Bureau see “digital” as the language of the future, and we are committed to expanding our digital offerings into areas that promise even greater benefits to our customers in the future. As new technologies provide us with possibilities that capture the imagination, we at The Bureau will deliver them to you with the same passion we have for over 100 years.

No one can know for certain what the future holds. As in 1898, the 21st century is full of questions and great expectations. Technological developments in printing and digital imaging have changed the look of the images we see every day.

Images and information are speeding digitally from place to place using high-speed data transfer and telecommunications This makes new concepts like remote proofing a reality, giving designers and print buyers new freedom and assurance. Imagesetters and presses are producing better images in more colors at larger sizes, and new color options such as hi-fi printing promise even more vivid printed pieces.

As new technologies provide us with possibilities that capture the imagination, we at The Bureau will deliver them to you with the same passion we have for over 100 years.
